Pet Vaccinations at 4 Paws Pet Clinic
With a variety of infectious diseases and parasites present in Illinois, such as Lyme disease, parvovirus and FeLV, vaccinations are the number one way you can protect your beloved pet from serious health threats. We can create an individual immunization program for your pet based on his or her lifestyle and your local conditions.
Essential Vaccines for Your Dog
Distemper Vaccine (DAPP) (Canine Distemper Virus, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
This combination vaccine protects against the most common and contagious viral diseases in dogs. Canine distemper and parvovirus are both serious and often fatal diseases affecting multiple organ systems. These illnesses generally require lengthy hospitalizations and usually results in a guarded prognosis. Adenovirus Type 2 vaccine protects against canine hepatitis and the parainfluenza vaccine helps protect against tracheobronchitis.
Rabies
Rabies virus is fatal, and all warm-blooded animals (including humans) are susceptible to infection. Most states, including our own, require rabies vaccinations by law.
Other Vaccines for Dogs
Bordetella ("Kennel Cough")
The Bordetella bacteria causes an extremely contagious upper respiratory infection. Your veterinarian may recommend this vaccine before your dog attends a doggy daycare program, boarding facility or dog show.
Lyme Disease
Carried by ticks, Lyme Disease is extremely prevalent in certain parts of the country. Pets residing in the east and west coast as well as the Great Lakes region are most susceptible to Lyme Disease.
Leptospirosis
Caused by a bacteria (Leptospira interrogans) found in soil, water, and the urine of infected animals, infection is most prevalent in moist climates where dogs may encounter standing or slow-moving water.
Canine Influenza Vaccine
Canine influenza is a relatively new disease. In the US, it was first diagnosed in 2004 in a group of racing greyhounds in Florida. Testing has shown that the virus mutated from a strain of equine influenza and gained the ability to spread from dog to dog. The symptoms of canine influenza are indistinguishable from kennel cough - a generic term for a condition caused by a number of different viruses and bacteria. Canine flu spreads easily in enclosed spaces that house numerous animals. If your dog goes to a boarding facility, doggy daycare, groomer's shop, or shows (not necessarily dog parks), he or she has a higher-than-average chance of getting sick. Our current recommendation is to consider this vaccine if you board or take your dog to doggy day care.
Essential Vaccines for Your Cat
Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia (FVRCP)
Commonly referred to as a "distemper vaccine," this combination vaccine protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia.
Rabies
Rabies virus is fatal, and all warm-blooded animals (including humans) are susceptible to infection.
Other Vaccines for Cats
Feline Leukemia (FeLV)
FeLV is a viral infection transmitted from one cat to another through close contact. This vaccine is highly recommended for cats that go outdoors or live-in multi-cat households.
